About
Purpose
The Friends of Ames Strings (FOAS) is a non-profit corporation whose purpose is to support string and orchestra programs for youth in the community.
FOAS is a parent guided organization that helps raise funds and present opportunities for orchestral string players in the Ames School District. It also presents opportunities to students from the surrounding communities of Ames, Iowa.
Programs
The annual workshop provides approximately 22 hours of instruction to elementary and middle school students during a two-week period in July. The emphasis is on playing in both small and large ensembles. The workshop ends with a concert on the evening of the last day. The program has received support from the City of Ames Commission for the Arts (COTA) and donations from individuals. There is a modest tuition fee. Click here for more information about our next workshop.
Supporting Orchestra Programs
FOAS gives grants to our local elementary and middle school orchestra programs.
Lessons
FOAS can connect orchestra students with instructors or tutors for private lessons. Email our FOAS Board to find out more.
If you are a tutor wanting to be added to our list, please fill out this form.
History
The Youth Orchestra Association of Ames was begun in 1985. In the early 1980s, the string and orchestra programs in the Ames Community Schools had been in decline for several years; hence, the organization was founded to strengthen the school and private teachers’ string programs.
Since that time the name has changed to Friends of Ames Strings and has sponsored a Summer Strings Workshop every year since 1985.
